Everyone’s talking about gratitude this month. I’m more interested in discernment.
As the year winds down, we don’t just get to choose what we’re grateful for – we get to choose what we’re carrying forward.
Today we’re digging into what I’ve been learning – as a writer, strategist, and human in a major season of change – about what to keep, what to release, and why letting go isn’t loss.
If you’ve been feeling the weight of “everything,” this one’s for you.

Choosing Discernment Over Gratitude
Subheader: Because gratitude fills you up. Discernment sets you free.
We’ve lost count of how many donation and dumpster runs we’ve made since moving home from Europe. Double digits, easily.
Every time we unloaded another carload, I felt lighter – not just physically, but mentally.
The last time we moved back to the States, we’d stored a “POD” full of our things. Furniture, kitchenware, décor, random boxes of “important stuff.”
When it was delivered five years later, I didn’t even open it.
I donated the whole thing.
If I hadn’t needed it in five years, I probably didn’t need it at all.
And I’ve never once regretted it.
There’s something witchy about being reunited with your things after months apart.
The smell of your old life still clings to them.
Each box is like a breadcrumb trail back to who you were.
But not everything you find deserves a place in who you’re becoming.
That’s where discernment comes in.
What We Carry in Business
In business, I’ve had to learn the same lesson.
For years, I carried the weight of chasing.
Chasing clients who weren’t ready.
Chasing people who wanted my brain but not my boundaries.
Chasing outcomes I couldn’t control.
It’s a subtle trap – especially for those of us who care deeply about our work.
Because at first, it looks like dedication.
But underneath? It’s anxiety disguised as service.
Chasing is the opposite of magnetism.
When you stop trying to convince people of their potential – or of your value – you make room for those who already get it.
Now, I don’t chase.
I collaborate.
I connect.
I partner with the ones moving in the same direction, at a similar pace, with shared values and work ethic.
That’s what I choose to carry forward.
What I’m Carrying Personally
I’m also carrying intentionality.
Presence.
A slower rhythm that matches this new multigenerational season we’re in.
Living with my parents on the same property isn’t always easy – it’s full of learning curves and redefinitions of space.
But it’s meaningful.
And I remind myself constantly why we chose this life.
Because it’s not just a move – it’s a movement.
A chance to live with more connection, more honesty, and more purpose.
And you can’t live intentionally while carrying everything.
The Power of Discernment
Discernment isn’t about judging what’s good or bad.
It’s about deciding what still fits.
That applies to:
- The systems you’ve outgrown.
- The clients who no longer align.
- The habits that once worked but now weigh you down.
We all have boxes we’ve been dragging around that no longer belong to us.
Sometimes they’re literal.
Sometimes they’re emotional.
Sometimes they’re expectations we didn’t even realize we were still honoring.
The invitation this season isn’t just to be thankful – it’s to be thoughtful.
To pause long enough to ask:What am I still carrying that doesn’t serve me anymore?
And what am I choosing to keep because it does?
Letting Go as a Strategy
Letting go is not failure.
It’s strategy.
When you consciously release what no longer serves you, you create space – for alignment, for opportunity, for peace.
You stop dragging the past into every new beginning.
And you start building from truth, not obligation.
This isn’t just spiritual.
It’s practical.
It’s how leaders, creators, and entrepreneurs stay resilient when everything else shifts.
So as everyone else talks about gratitude month, I’ll also be thinking about discernment.
Not just what I’m thankful for – but what I’m releasing.
Not just what I’ve gained – but what I’ve outgrown.
And what I’m making space for next.
Because clarity isn’t found in what you keep adding.
It’s found in what you finally set down.
Your turn:
What are you letting go of this season – and what are you choosing to carry forward?
Drop it in the comments or reply to this email.
I’d love to hear your story.
And in case I haven’t said it lately, I’m truly grateful you’re here. Thank you.
