If your positioning statement sounds like everyone else’s, it’s not positioning – it’s wallpaper.
If I see one more “I help women feel confident and thrive,” I might actually scream.
It’s not mean, it’s math: if you sound like everyone else, people stop reading.
Today I’m breaking down the exact formula I use – as a writer and messaging strategist who’s spent 20 years helping leaders, coaches, and speakers get visible, credible, and profitable – to craft positioning statements that stick. You’ll learn how to write one that says something real, sells your value, and finally sounds like you.
Stop Saying You “Help Women Thrive” – and Say Something Real
Your positioning statement isn’t supposed to sound pretty. It’s supposed to sound true.
If I hear one more: “I’m the coach who helps women feel confident and thrive,”
…I might actually gag.
Not because confidence or thriving are bad goals.
But because it’s vague, overused, and meaningless without context.
And you’re better than that.
Here’s the thing:
Your positioning statement is your first impression.
It’s the split-second snapshot that tells people:
✅ Who you are
✅ What you do
✅ Who you do it for
✅ What happens when you do it well
If it’s fuzzy, generic, or forgettable, people tune out before you ever get to the good stuff.
This isn’t about fancy copy.
It’s about clarity.
Clarity builds trust.
And trust converts.
The Formula That Works
Here’s the exact structure I teach my clients – and use myself:
“I’m a [title/role] who helps [audience] [achieve specific outcome] through [method or approach].”
Or, for a more collaborative spin:
“I [verb/action] with [audience] to [do/achieve] so they can [result].”
It’s not sexy. But it’s effective.
Because what matters most is that it passes the “so what?” test.
Here’s mine for reference:
“I’m the writer and messaging strategist who collaborates with business leaders, coaches, and speakers to use powerful messaging, branding, and public speaking to get visible, credible, and profitable.”
In one sentence, you know:
- Who I am
- What I do
- Who I serve
- And the results I deliver
Simple. Clean. Clear.
No fluff. No filler.
That’s what your audience wants.
Why It Matters More Than You Think
If your positioning statement is generic, it’s not neutral – it’s costly.
Because a fuzzy message attracts fuzzy clients.
When you’re vague, you invite every wrong-fit person into your world.
When you’re clear, you act like a magnet for your best-fit audience.
It’s how you filter opportunity.
It’s how you stand out in a market full of sameness.
And it’s how you stop wasting time explaining yourself – and start letting your words do the work.
What’s Getting In the Way
Most entrepreneurs overcomplicate this because they think clarity will make them sound boring.
But the truth? It’s the opposite.
Specificity isn’t boring. It’s compelling.
People don’t hire you because you “help them thrive.”
They hire you because you help them stop feeling stuck, land their first 10 clients, or finally take the stage with confidence.
They hire you because you show them what’s possible in their language, not yours.
That’s what clarity really does – it closes the gap between who you are and how others perceive you.
How to Fix Yours (Without Overthinking It)
Write your current positioning statement exactly as you say it now.
Circle every word that could apply to anyone (“women,” “success,” “confidence,” “freedom”).
Replace those words with specifics: who, what, how, why.
Read it out loud to someone who doesn’t know your industry.
If they get it, you’re done.
If they ask follow-up questions, keep tightening.
Your Words Should Work for You
If your statement isn’t opening doors, it’s time to rewrite it.
Because when your message is clear, everything else gets easier – sales calls, content, offers, visibility.
Your positioning statement is the root system of your brand.
If it’s strong, everything above ground grows.
